Cruising on the Atlantic with Castle Lager in hand – Wow!
Isn’t that a kick-ass heading?
I’d like to think so!
But let me begin rather tamely.
I’m aware that many of you who will read this story are travel hackers, aka frequent travelers, who know how to make it cheap crisscrossing the world.
You are the guys who have the intimate knowledge of how to work within the existing rules set up by airlines, credit cards and hotels, and use them to your advantage to earn free travel including flights, lodging and other upgrades.
Well, this story is not for you guys.
This story is for those of you who travel less frequently like me, but who, unlike me, depend on the tour companies to take them abroad, often paying up much more than what they would, should they do everything themselves.
I’m from India, and what I can tell you with a bit of authority is this.
In exchange for hand-holding you to see places in South Africa, most Indian tour companies charge you large sums of money, conveniently leaving aside the adrenaline-pumping destinations like the Kruger National Park or the shark cage diving in the Atlantic, or even the visit to the Robben Island or to watch the Cape fur seals.
Shouldn’t you see these places?
Shouldn’t you pass by the pride of untamed lions gazing at you, taking rest after a sumptuous meal? Shouldn’t you watch out in uneasy anticipation, submerged inside a steel cage in the icy Atlantic, for the great white sharks lurking around in their natural habitat? Shouldn’t you drive past the Sentinel on the other side of the bay watching the magnificent view of the Atlantic?
Of course you should.
After all you don’t go to South Africa every other day, do you!
But then only these 2 places plus the Robben Island may cost you upward of 37,000 rupees or 540+ dollars. So why should the tour companies take you to these places and squeeze their ever fatter margins if you are tutored to be happy seeing places that cost them – well, almost peanuts?
Tell you what, you can see all of these places and more for just short of Rupees one lakh (~1500 USD), that too in complete safety and comfort.
I and my 2 sisters did just that last week in our 12-day trip. And we spent Rupees 97,067 per (~$1411) person to be precise.
The only addition to this was the cost for food, some local conveyance, wifi and mobile telephony, and some lip-smacking wines. The total cost per person came to Rupees 109,455 counting from Mumbai and back to the city at the end of the trip.
So…wanna read my story?
In the next (second) part I take you through what we did in the Kruger National Park and in Johannesburg on the first 5 days. Then in the third part you will see me explaining the next 5 days of our trip to the beautiful coastal city of Cape Town and to Kleinbaai for the jaw-dropping trip to shark cage diving in the Atlantic.
So…stay tuned!
