Outsourcers may please note that Kolkata is now the fifth most popular BPO destination in the world. Chennai, Hyderabad and Pune take the top 3 spots. And then comes Kolkata a slot later. In the process, the city has outgunned Delhi and Mumbai and also those popular destinations like Ho Chi Minh City, Shanghai and Beijing.
How has Kolkata with the still prevailing poor infrastructure overshot the other weighty competitors? The answer perhaps is that the city has an abundant supply of talent, which many other places don’t.
Nasscom, the parent IT body in the country – it has recently opened its city office – says in the coming 3 years the total IT export from India will double from the present figure of USD 3200 crore. It also estimates that the total IT personnel required by 2010 will touch the awe-inspiring figure of 25 million.
Given all that, Kolkata’s emerging as a popular IT destination is no surprise. In fact the city is fast climbing the outsourcing ladder, having already made a big mark in knowledge process outsourcing or the KPO.
Not without reason therefore that the biggies like Genpact, Capgemini, HSBC, Cognizant, Wipro and IBM are already upping their presence in the city.
