Metro’s plans

You may say Metro Cash-n-Carry’s city entry is jinxed as its debut large-format store in Singhabari off EM Bypass just after Ruby Hospital is lying half-finished because of a court case over the plot it’s coming up.

But that hasn’t prevented the German behemoth to unleash its other plans that includes setting up an academy to train small retailers in merchandising, packaging and other aspects of running a retail outlet.

Smart plan that, and it’s highly welcome. Metro has also launched training program for sheep farmers in 8 Bengal districts. Why? Here’s what Marcus Dichtl, the director (finance and administration) of Metro Cash & Carry, India, has to say:

We will source meat from the local producers. So the program is aimed at improving the quality of livestock.

The German giant will also train 200 fishing crews at the fish-handling infrastructure developed at Frazergunj in South 24-Parganas.

And yes, it has already got about 80,000 members – hotels, restaurants, caterers and small retailers – already signed up to buy from its outlets that will be at least 3 in number very soon.
