Google > Microsoft + Yahoo

May 7, 2007 By Partha Bhattacharya Leave a Comment

Net2Phone.comThis is one vintage rumor that refuses to die down. Surfacing every now and then, it simply doesn’t actually happen. This time however, the news is fairly strong and it seems talks indeed are going on for Microsoft acquiring Yahoo! for nearly $50 billion.

If that occurs, it’ll be one of the largest acquisitions ever. And perhaps it makes sense for them to merge if only to counter Google. Or, does it?

Google is now synonymous with the word ‘search’. Looking at its phenomenal reach, that is almost out of bounds of its nearest competiton, it won’t be naive to coin the phrase: Think Search, Think Google.

Google’s success is something that continues to baffle analysts. Just how serious Google is in the field of online search can be gauged from its settling dispute with Copiepresse, the Belgian publishers’ group. See Danny Sullivan’s story, Belgian Papers Back In Google. Also see my story, Not me, please!

One may be skeptical of Google’s continuing success with its AdWords program, but the fact of the matter is that while Google continues to rake in moollah with it, many small website owners like me have also made handsome money displaying AdSense ads.

Consider this: While Yahoo!’s YPN program is inaccessible to most websites outside of US, AdSense is not. The same holds true for many other text-ad publishing network.

Numerous examples can be given why Google is the most preferred search engines in almost every country.

Therefore to checkmate Google is just not immensely difficult, it is seemingly impossible. Today, Google is people’s choice. To match that, to lure away those who already benefit from Google, is a Herculean task.

Be that as it may, here is a video clipping on Microsoft’s proposed buying of Yahoo!. If you’ve an opinion, do tell us by commenting on this post.
