Between Sinthee More on BT Road and Sodepur further north, large format malls are coming up soon. BT Road sees good amount of traffic all day long, much of which are heavy trucks that cross Vivekananda Bridge to enter the city, and/or passing through connecting roads to fall on Jessore Road, before taking NH-34 to proceed to North East.
The trouble is a big stretch of BT Road comes under the jurisdiction of WB Police, and perhaps for their inefficiency there is frequent traffic snarl at critical junctions like Chiria More, Tobin Road, and Sinthee More. Adding to chaos are innumerable private buses and minibuses that ply on the road, and of course the congestions on the sides of the roads.
All of that do not paint a rosy picture of that area, which may be the reason why big malls have so far not come up there unlike south of the city. Now the situation is set to change.
At least 3 giant malls, expectedly equipped with multiplexes and anchor store, are being built, one each at Sinthee More, Rathtala (Belghoria) and Sodepur. 2 more are to take shape on Jessore Road between Lake Town and Bangur.
These malls will surely do well because the catchment area of each extends far beyond immediate vicinity. Lakhs of daily passengers commute from northern suburbs to the city, and they form a huge chunk of likely buyers.
The other possibility of luring buyers will be in the form of those who come to the city via Dakshineswar from across the Hooghly. Once the new Vivekananda Bridge is ready, one may expect a big rush of people coming from there. This will continue till the Kolkata West township becomes ready, after which who knows the flow of people may perhaps reverse.
