Kolkata West is but Howrah

January 11, 2007 By Partha Bhattacharya Leave a Comment

Even as tempers are yet to cool down in Singur and Nandigram, a new wave of protest against another showpiece development is brewing in Howrah. But this is different and there is perhaps less reason to loose sleep.

The issue concerns the Kolkata West International City (KWIC), that grand township gradually taking shape off NH-6 near Howrah-Amta Road, being built by the Indonesian groups, Ciputra and Salim. Eminent Howrah citizens object that the project must not be called Kolkata West because it’s totally located in Howrah district.

They have met the Howrah DM with their objection and want that the word Kolkata be replaced with Howrah.

That may be a tough call for the builders if only for the reason that the word Kolkata lends some amount of credence in the minds of prospective buyers that they are not far off from the metropolis. Not that they are, for the township is very well connected with the city.

But since the word Howrah fetches nothing but cacophonous memory of Howrah station and adjoining areas in most minds, it remains to be seen if the demand for name-change is actually acceded.

Meanwhile, if you plan your next abode in or near Kolkata, do have a look at KWIC. It most certainly warrants a serious consideration (given below are some artist images).
