Jobs on platter

December 11, 2006 By Partha Bhattacharya Leave a Comment

The Telegraph Jobs MartInfocom 2006, billed as the biggest IT exposition in the country ended yesterday at the Salt Lake Stadium. Besides Nasscom, the ABP group, through its arm Business World, has been the main sponsor of the 5-day event. IT (aka Information Technology) being the epitome of great Indian surge in global arena, Infocom 2006 expectedly drew a massive participation from teeming youth from the city and adjoining places. {Picture source]

Companies that opened stalls did their bit of business, but it was The Telegraph Jobs Mart that was perhaps the most-visited stall in the fair. It follows from various accounts that BPO companies were there in full force to raise their head-counts, and why not. This was one place where techies would invariably come, and it made imminent sense to cast net among them at minimum cost and effort to make a good catch.

Infocom organizers say next year the show will be even bigger, which is only to be expected what with Kolkata’s maturing as a hot destination of IT-related activities. Comparisons with other hot destinations show that Kolkata still lags far behind in terms of quantum of IT exports, but the gaps are gradually narrowing. It will be interesting to see how long it takes Kolkata to obliterate the gap and then forge ahead in this knowledge industry.
