Who sees what

December 11, 2006 By Partha Bhattacharya Leave a Comment

A few days back, a newspaper ad appeared on behalf of 8 city-based chambers of commerce, in which the group expressed concern over politicization of industrial progress in Bengal, and appealed to public not to hinder the path of the state’s industrial re-awakening.

I’m excerpting here how 3 leading newspapers reported the incident.

  1. The Telegraph (News title: Chambers unite on Singur):

In a rare show of solidarity, all eight business chambers in the city have expressed concern over the politicisation of the industrial process — an oblique reference to the Singur protests.

The industry bodies issued a joint statement urging people to raise their voice against any attempt to destabilise industrial resurgence.

  2. Kolkata Newsline (News title: Industry heads fear protests could halt growth):

On Thursday, they finally decided to speak out and express concern over the politicisation of investment, without naming anybody or any place. But their support for Bhattacharjee’s industrialisation drive was unequivocal, as they appealed to all sections of society to “raise their voice against any process or attempt to destabilise the march towards rejuvenating the State’s industrial growth.”

  3. Hindustan Times (Loyal friends leave Left in cold):

In Kolkata, eight chambers of commerce jointly issued a similar statement: “The process of industrialisation cannot be vitiated by politicising issues that need to be resolved with logic that addresses both industry-centric imperatives and also has a human face.”………..

The surprise backlash made the Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee immediately jump into action. It tried to make peace with Trinamool’s stormy petrel Mamata Banerjee.

Looking at them, what comes to mind is that perhaps no news can ever be served without differing shades of opinion, whether or not that reflects the reality on the ground. Any comment?
