To describe his comeback innings at Potchefstroom in South Africa yesterday in one word, it’s ‘fabulous’. He has fought against all odds, and there is no doubt he has that steely resolve which very few people have. At least none in the present Indian cricket team has that. 2 persons who readily come to mind who I believe have/had that kind of persona are Indira Gandhi and Jyoti Basu. [Picture source]
One hears there were angry outbursts of fans in South Africa who said they don’t want meek captains like Rahul Dravid, who apparently lack the spine to stand up to strong challenges when touring other countries. For all his superb performance with bat, there perhaps will be few doubts that Rahul is rather gentle.
Nothing wrong there per se, at least as long as the going is good, but in adverse conditions, you need a captain who has it in him to lead from the front. Sourav is a better candidate for such situations.
But of course there’s no question of Sourav getting back the captaincy, bogged as he will be to ‘prove’ his worth in the team. One doesn’t feel Sourav thinks about captaincy even in his remotest dreams. He’ll be only too happy if included in world cup squad, and if luck favors him and he gets to play some of his scintillating knocks in the largest cricket arena, who knows he may say goodbye to the muddying game that cricket is in India.
