Among the myriad wares the hawkers sell in suburban local trains, one of my favorites used to be Kolkata-Howrah Somoy Saroni, or Kolkata-Howrah Time Tables. A slim booklet it would be, but would have every conceivable information you might need to move in and about the city. Trains leaving Sealdah and Howrah, long-distance buses leaving Esplanade and Howrah, the post offices and their PIN (Postal Index Number) codes, Kolkata intra-city bus routes, city landmarks – you name it, you have it in the booklet.
Ready reckoners such as above are always a great help. They provide concise information, and since there is a need to economize on cost (so that more people can afford to buy), the ready reckoners will usually shun too many details, which the users don’t mind, concerned as they are to have the minimum information to work on.
And now, if you’re a student, a parent or a teacher, you’ll be happy to know that The Telegraph has come out with a ready reckoner regarding city schools. Aptly called The Telegraph in Schools (TTIS) School Directory, it promises to be a detailed guide of schools.
