Some of my readers have complained that I often stray away from Kolkata news, such as the one below. I’m told that if I loose focus (that is, if I write anything other than about Kolkata), my blog would soon become unattractive to many.
Well, to give my reply in 2 words, it will be: I differ. Why? Let me explain.
I feel the blog-world has expanded so much that most blogs are no longer narratives of clustered events. If you consider a newspaper like The Telegraph, which is the #1 English daily from Kolkata, you’ll find news from all over the world. That’s only to be expected, you might say. You are right, but the fact is we’ve come to recognize newspapers as part of mainstream media, and so there is no disagreement if they’ve ‘outside news’.
In contrast, blogs are a recent phenomenon. It’s a long way before there is some amount of acceptability of blogs’ catering to multiple news-types. I’m only making a small effort.
Second reason in my favor is more direct, which is this. If you notice my statement what this blog is about, I’ve mentioned thus: Plus an occasional rundown on interesting happenings elsewhere. A plausible explanation, don’t you agree?
My third reason will be taking the ball to the question-raisers’ court. Isn’t the article on Google concerning the people of Kolkata? Aren’t there web-enthusiasts in Kolkata, who’d like to know what’s happening to search engine scenario elsewhere? Mind you, the web-world is no longer an inhibited way of looking at events.
Yes, I do agree that there ought to be a bar on sensationalism. Or, is it? Whatever that is, I do make efforts to be as objective as feasible when I speak of happenings, be it about Kolkata or Los Angeles (for that matter).
Having said that, let me add that there indeed are niche blogs that are best served with relevant topics only. Am I having the last laugh? I leave it to you to judge.
