This one statistic has a strong potential. It conveys the impression that India is a highly literate country. The truth is however vastly different.
What’s the stat anyway…! Well here it is.
Mohan Jatua, the MoS for I&B, informs, “More than 74,000 newspapers are registered with the Registrar of Newspapers for India (RNI).”
But wait, there are surprises. The first 2 places belong to UP and Delhi with 11,789 and 10,066 newspapers respectively. Now, why surprise?
Because UP is one of those so-called BIMARU states that are more poor than the others. And because literacy can only come after the stomach is filled.
Delhi is also a surprise if only because the state is tiny compared to much bigger states like say Maharashtra that comes third with 9,127.
