Oh my, what a surprise! Okay, Tyler Walker Williams was an elected councilor last year. But a Vice President? That too as a nominee of AISA (All India Students’ Association), the left-allied body? Sure, Karat and Bardhan will be happy as AISA wins 2 top posts including Tyler’s. Or, will they? For, AISA is known as more ‘left’ than Karat’s SFI/DYFI, though for the record, both Prakash Karat and Sitaram Yechury earlier belonged to JNUSU.
Whatever that is, Tyler’s election this afternoon is perhaps the first as a foreign student in the history of JNUs’ student elections. But that’s not all. Tyler is an American, studying Hindi in JNU.
2 things come to notice. One, JNU students do not mind having an American VP, which is very welcome, especially since many of us believe that Americans can only be staunch pursuers of capital at the expense of everyone’s liberty. Two, there must be something in JNU’s air that it has enticed an American into an ultra-left practitioner.
But perhaps a change is already under way even in faraway US, where a confirmed Socialist, Bernie Sanders, wins the Vermont seat into the Senate this week. Sanders is said to be the first Socialist ever in the Senate, and who knows this might be a beginning. Read The Telegraph story.
No doubt, trend-watchers will have their hands full in coming days studying the events so far apart from one another.
