Content to rescue

November 15, 2006 By Partha Bhattacharya Leave a Comment

It’s always been so. Only we, the impatient website owners, do not pay attention to it. By the time its necessity becomes no longer avoidable, we’d have wasted good amount of time and effort without aim, and – if luck disfavors – a good amount of ad dollars.

I’m talking about a clearly defined content development plan.

Many small website owners like me spend precious time stressing on ‘monetization’ model even before we’ve built enough content for our sites. This is a wrong step for the simple reason, that unless there is a steady flow of traffic, monetization effort will not succeed.

And traffic comes only in search of targeted content that is relevant to a site.

As the heading of this post suggests, it has to be content first – and plenty of it – that will fetch traffic, which will then contribute to monetization. I call the model, Content > Traffic > Presell > Monetization.

Is there a way around? Unfortunately none. Consider this: Even if I spend on ads, I need to have convincing contents to inspire my potential visitors to buy my product or service.

Is there an exception to this ‘rule’? Perhaps yes, that is if I’m selling branded items. But a majority of us do not deal in branded products. Do we?
