A dishonest government

November 9, 2006 By Partha Bhattacharya Leave a Comment

Dishonesty is not something to feel sorry about. At least not in a country like ours. Little wonder, India ranks 88th in TI’s (Transparency International) CPI 2005 (Corruption Perceptions Index) (link).

Therefore when it becomes known that the WB government chooses one, discarding the other for reasons why it must not choose the one it does, it does not raise many eyebrows. But for those who really love the city, it hurts, and deeply.

Just what the matter is! Well, the maidan has been declared out of bounds for good reasons, which means no fairs and other congregations must take place there. It now seems the hon’ble High Court’s ruling doesn’t apply to all.

Thus while the Book Fair is being pushed to be held at the same venue where it happened all these years, the Industrial India Trade Fair (IITF) is being quietly pursued to stop eyeing the place.

If any, this is a blatant display of double standards on the part of the government. This is what the noted environmentalist, Subhas Dutta has to say:

This unprecedented government interest in a non-government event warrants investigation. Link to this quote. Read my earlier post.
