Emami Tower

March 9, 2007 By Partha Bhattacharya Leave a Comment

A few furlongs ahead of Rubi Hospital crossing on EM Bypass, on the eastern flank of the thoroughfare, several eye-catching buildings are taking shape over past several months. First off the block was Calcutta International School, which has shifted base from Lee Road’s cramped campus.

And now comes Emami Tower. It’s a 90,000 sq ft edifice designed by the renowned architect Hafeez Contractor (the image below is copyrighted by him). Beside Emami Tower is the office building of Shrachi Group, which too looks very elegant, and has a Chevrolet showroom at the ground floor.

Beyond the 2 showpieces is a big enough vacant land that promises to see action shortly as announced on a hoarding erected there. If you head opposite toward Garia, as you reach what is known as ‘Singhabari’, you’ll see frenetic activity going on to complete the sprawling outlet of German company, Metro Cash-n-Carry, once again on the eastern side of EM Bypass.

Coming to Emami Tower, it’s being formally inaugurated today by Amitabh Bachchan. Big B is the brand ambassador of several Emami products, like Boroplus, Navratna Oil and Fast Relief.

One feels after these constructions, more of them will be built along both sides of EM Bypass. Now riding along the expressway gives a nice green view on either side. This will go once the buildings come up. But if they are as nice-looking as Emami Tower, perhaps there’ll be fewer reasons to complain.
