When there is dip in the air, business shifts to golf course. The green expanse, undulating and expressive, with a benign Sun as the backdrop, provides the perfect ambience to talk about money and opportunity.
So say those who participate in them, and looking at popularity of golf among corporate chieftains, there is little doubt that this indeed is so, though I haven’t had fortune to be one of them thus far.
Judging reports, it appears India may soon become a popular golf destination among Asian countries, what with increasing propensity among realtors to develop golf courses within integrated townships through the length and breadth of the country – these for the crème-de-la-crème of the society.
To name one, there is Unitech Karma Lakelands on NH-8 in Gurgaon, which is to come up on a 200-acre land, encircled by green. Then there is 1500-acre Sushant Golf City near Lucknow, being built by Ansal API. Golf-cum-township projects are also planned in Jaipur, Delhi and Hyderabad among others. And of course in Kolkata. Kolkata is blessed to have river Hooghly to its west, where a constant play of high and low tides brings it an unmatched enigma. On its eastern banks near Budge Budge – which has an oil jetty to unload light cargo – is the hitherto famous Batanagar factory of Bata Shoe Company.
On 262 acres of Bata’s surplus land is coming up an attractive township with about 5000 apartments. A 9-hole executive golf course is also on the cards. If it happens, one may safely assume that it’ll be a thumping success, if only for its grand locale.
