Youngsters who are hooked onto one or more ‘social’ sites will tell you chatting is passé, socializing is in. In India, going by reports, Orkut rules the roost, and since it is by ‘invitation’ only, there’s all the more scramble for it. Suppose you ask them if they know who Orkut Buyukkokten is. Chance is you’ll be staring at blank faces except for their familiarity with the word, Orkut.
Try explaining that Orkut Buyukkokten is a Turkish-born StanU-doctorate-cum-software-engineer-cum-Google-employee, who creates ‘Orkut‘ (as we know) in his spare time nearly 3 years back, which Google says it owns because it’s created by none other than its own employee, you’ll get the standard reply: Who cares!
Indeed who cares, as long as you believe in the saying, if the mango is sweet it doesn’t matter where it comes from. Meanwhile, as Orkut, MySpace and Meetup dominate the global ‘socializing’ scene, we have some desi varieties too. And who are they? Here’s a pick of some prominent ones in alphabetical order:
Fropper
IndiaGrid
Jhoom! (a la Yahoo!, note the exclamation sign)
minglebox
yaari
By the way (sorry, I should’ve written btw), just in case you’re researching on the subject, do take a peek at Wikipedia’s listing of social networking sites. It may become handy.

Still waiting!!! [Picture source]
