I remember having read a great verse in Bengali about stealing. Not that I haven’t read other great Bengali verses, of which there’re aplenty. But somehow, this one stuck in one corner of my mind (perhaps because its happening is so common these days that my mind is attuned to its existence). Here it is:
Churi bidya mahabidya, jodi na poro dhora
Roughly translated, it means: Stealing is a great art, if not caught. Alas, not everyone is a mahachor, not every theft is a class of art. And so, in spite of inspirational Bunty Aur Babli, Navjot and Nisha Singh got caught with their booty, as The Telegraph reports.
Great thefts always fascinate me, as much as poorly planned ones leave a bad taste. I’ve a collection of both in an early blog-post. While one is a spectacular heist of $70 million cash from a Brazilian bank in Fortaleza, the other is a disgusting story of looters arriving a trifle early in the bank, collecting no more than a paltry Rs.40.
Will it be long before a great mind works out the next grand heist to be proud of? We’ll wait.
