I welcome my readers and well-wishers to my first post of 2007. I hope you’ll all continue to find Kolkta Musing the perfect place to breathe fresh air as it blows from this great metropolis.
I’m happy to come back in the thick of things… News’ never tire here. There are so many plots and sub-plots, emotions and opinions that at times it becomes really difficult to take a pick. Take today’s example.
A bandh – rather a collective bandh – has been called and there are the usual pro and anti bandh rhetoric. The day is fine, chill in the morning (and evening) and warm during the day. Just the day you’d hope for a nice leisurely break. What would you do!
You may either cock a snook at bandh-callers and proceed to work (mind you, the bandh is not sponsored by the rulers, so conveyance will be / is there alright). Else you may simply loiter around in your para (once again, most shops will be / are open) and soak in some sun, pretending it’s another holiday. You also have a chance to revisit the list of promises you made on new year eve to check out what all are not possible to keep.
Whatever it is that you choose, you’re never out of options. During each bandh, the industry captains express dismay and sound pessimistic which they have to (these are times when their opinions are actively sought by news channels), and after each such forced work stoppages, they go back to normalcy.
So does everyone else who has stake if the work stops. Them apart, not many really bother. For, come what may, there’s little reason to feel that bandh will make a retreat any time soon.
Be that as it may, few will disagree that Kolkata is a place like none in India. Here is a city where passions run high very easily and have many shades of colors. It has so many layers of life, which perhaps is one reason why it doesn’t take long for a rank outsider to melt into one of them with commensurate ease.
