Mahalaya

October 9, 2007 By Partha Bhattacharya Leave a Comment

Early morning tomorrow is when Uma with her grown-up children will seek blessings from Mahadev before embarking on the once-in-a-year sojourn to the world of humans. And so will commence debi-paksha, one of the most auspicious periods in the Bengali Hindu calendar.

Men will take dips in the ‘holy’ ghats of the Ganges, aka Hooghly, and remember forefathers to take their blessings.

A week from Mahalaya is Mahasoshthi by which time Maa Durga already touches down the earth and is prepared to be accorded warm welcome. Here are a nice video on Mahalaya with clippings of Birendra Krishna Bhadra’s immortal voice.
