Marrying the Indian way

November 7, 2006 By Partha Bhattacharya Leave a Comment

Calling all prospective brides and grooms everywhere: If you want your wedding to be a grand affair, go the Indian way. Starting from sophisticated match-making (see my story) to making massive theme-based marriage center to arranging lavish spread of mouth-watering menu, everything connected with marriage is available on hire.

Gone are days when wedding ceremonies would not only drain money, but would also be very strenuous – specially for bride’s parents – in order to ensure that nothing goes wrong. Today, there are wedding planners whose job it is to do everything that the occasion needs. Yes, the cost goes up by several notches (and so the idea is still restricted within the rich and influenced), but all your bother as a perfect host is shouldered by the planner.

Wedding organizing or marriage planning, whichever you choose, is likely to be the next booming business once the concept becomes popular. For Indians, marriage is a great occasion for merry-making and get-together, so they like to do it in style. It’s not uncommon for parents to earmark a major portion of their lives’ savings for their daughter’s or son’s weddings.

Going a step further, would it be wrong to forecast that a day will soon be when Indian marriage planners cater to ‘outsourced’ weddings from other countries? I’m pretty confident this would indeed be the case sooner than imagined. We’ll see.
