While Lakshmi Nivas Mittal ascends the throne as the richest Briton, the house that his paternal family including him as a kid lived in as a tenant has been razed to the ground. The house as such was a large one (as this TT report with pics shows) that occupied as much as 52 cottahs of land on Chitpore Road.
The house, known as Ganesh Garh (and not Mittal Nivas as one may be tempted to think), was also lived in by the freedom fighter Maharaja Manindra Chandra Nandy, and was once a part of Cossimbazar Raj Wards Estate.
Ganesh Garh was a maze of scores of small units of habitation like many buildings in the north Kolkata still are. In one of those landed LN Mittal’s father in early 50s with his family while setting feet in Kolkata. LN Mittal attended a local school and later went to study commerce in St. Xavier’s College, all from this house.
Now, as the place has turned into a playground, the local MP, Sudhansu Seal opines that after the court cases related to the plot are cleared, a girls’ college will come up there to be built by Maheswari Vidyalaya.
If that happens, it’s still okay. But will it? Whatever it is that ultimately takes shape, perhaps Mr. Mittal won’t be much interested, busy that he is to enlarge his steel empire. Not bad that either.
