Nasscom, the fatherly body for everything IT and ITES in India, that was once headed by Dewang Mehta for 10 years during the 90s, has opened its footprint in the city on Sep 7. This is the parent body’s first regional office in Kolkata.
In the early 90s when the country first started the present spell of economic liberalization, it was largely Mehta’s doing that India saw its rise as a software giant, carving out a big share of prominence in the world stage.
Nasscom has its roots and tentacles mostly in the southern and western part of the country centering around Bangalore, the country’s ultimate IT destination.
Now that the body opens office in Kolkata is perhaps an indication that the eastern part of the country too is waking up to chart its own IT-place under the sun. The Kolkata Nasscom is located at the Webel Bhavan in Salt Lake.
Kiran Karnik, the present head of Nasscom, is optimistic that Bengal will create 2.5 lakh IT jobs by 2010. He also stresses the importance of harnessing the right skills for the ever-changing IT/ITES jobs.
Like elsewhere, here too the parent body will start the 2 tests, Nasscom Assessment of Competence(NAC) and National Skills Registry (NSR), to help IT job-seekers to test their skills and find suitable jobs.
The IT bell is ringing loudly in the east. Nasscom’s coming is therefore welcome.
