Let me admit that the first time I saw Sanjay Dutt on big screen was when he played the role of Girish in Parineeta. I was partly driven by the desire to see how Saratchandra’s novel has been made into a film by the former ad-man Pradeep Sarkar, and also out of curiosity that had arisen due to its pre-release hype. In the end, I liked the film, and I liked the performance of the actors. According to me, Sanjay Dutt looked a bit gawky for his role, but nevertheless performed well. [Picture source]
That is not to say I haven’t seen him on small screen (though I rarely see a complete Hindi film), or haven’t read about him in papers. As in Parineeta, so presumably in other Hindi films, he comes across as a person who leaves a distinct impression of his being affable and homely.
The bits and pieces of news showing him in real life, more recently when he comes to or leaves TADA court, are reflective of an easy-going persona, who does not bear ill-feelings in his mind for long, if ever. That he struck a chord in the hearts of millions of Indians was evident when there was a collective sigh of relief after the court acquitted him from being labeled as a terrorist, which clearly he was not.
If memory serves me right, in the last Maharashtra elections (or perhaps the general elections), he appeared for rival candidates in meetings, which was something that showed he could not turn away a friend irrespective of his political color. I believe this is one thing that shows he is a man of trust and simplicity.
This Sunday’s (Dec 3) HT columns by both Vir Sanghvi and Karan Thapar very nicely bring about the character that Sanjay Dutt is. Here is wishing him all the best.
