Guess what’s the new buzz around: All that glitters on small screen is gold. No it’s not anyone else’s saying, it’s mine, and I mean every word of it. Why, what’s the matter, you might ask.
India’s young is caught on a strange yearning for glamorous life, and what can be the most ideal place than the idiot box! Sample some. Last week a teenage girl from Howrah, participating in a Mumbai song contest, nearly sent the young minds into a tizzy, what with ‘nail-biting’ news coverage by Star Ananda. She won the contest, and when she landed at her place, people swarmed around her as if a winged angel had just landed from heaven.

What’s bad in that, you might say. After all, are not these ‘talent-search’ programs direct descendants of similar American and British sitcoms? Oh yes, they are. But then, the Americans and British have congenial climate to nurture and promote real talents in sports, academics, arts and so on.
Not so in India. Therefore, when I see my son skipping his games so as not to miss another silly dance competition on TV, I begin to worry. And this one is real.
