Remember him? That environment crusader, who almost single-handedly denied the Kolkata Book Fair in Maidan this year! Well, he did not visit the KBF in Salt Lake Stadium because he felt he might be unwelcome there.
But Subhas is not against Book Fair, and certainly does not deserve being portrayed a ‘villain’ as if he has enmity with books and culture. If not his action, Dhakuria Lakes wouldn’t have been ridden of settlers along the railway lines committing nuisance, or for that matter, the prized Citizens Park wouldn’t be there beside Victoria Memorial.
Subhas Dutta runs a successful CA firm, and so, by his own words, can afford to chase wild bull (boner mosh tarano). Sure, he can while away time doing nothing in his spare, but luckily he has chosen caring for environment as his passion.
It is easy to term his actions aiming at collecting laurels, but only he knows how difficult it is to take on powerful vested interests. He has been charged in 15 criminal and 2 attempt-to-murder cases, but the court threw them away. He has that image when he argues in the court that speaks of truth and conviction.
But, above all, Subhas Dutta is a realist. He believes in fighting in courts rather than slugging it out say at Singur and Nandigram as the opposition parties are now doing. There are 2 reasons for that. One of course is he is not a politician, though he has been offered by all parties except CPM to stand in elections.
The second reason is more close to his heart. He knows and ardently believes that the judiciary is an important pillar of India’s democracy. That is why, not being a law practitioner hasn’t prevented him from fighting the maximum number of court cases in the country. And yes, he hasn’t lost any of them so far.
[This write-up is a reflection of an interview of him that appeared in Feb 25 issue of ABP, Kolkata.]

Yes, Mr.subhas dutta doing great work. But subhas dutta not alone in this country , there are so many people who are willingly taking leadership for green earth-pollution free air, unfortunately , they are not highlighted as like as subhas dutta .
Regarding Maidan, book fair under the control of judicial and results –No permission for book fair ‘kolkata. It’s a great victory of Mr. Subhas Dutta.
Repeatedly , Subhas Dutta quoting that he is not against of Book fair , but he wants ,not in Maidan , it may be in other side, there is no issue.
Book Fair ‘Kolkata, it’s a prestigious issue , and traditionally renound for his multi linguistics and internationally integration, and off course, great shelter for poets, writers and book lovers to interact each other this time.
Mr. Subhas Dutta said, Book Fair causes harm for society because of pollution and damaged green maidan.
But, I would like to express my views as a book lover, peace lover, environment thinker to Mr Dutta, that , Sir, this is great work you have done , there is no question , but Regarding book fair , you shouldn’t do anything which is indirectly goes against Book fair. Your not against Book fair, but it is like : we are not against for Railway hawkers but, we are against for selling on train and station premises” What does it mean?
I can give you data , that , what ever the pollution occurs due to Book Fair that is not big mater, coz, every day people suffering for lead toxicity and other toxicities. One most things that , Book Fair gives trouble only 10 to 15 days and that is almost 6 hours in a day , and it is not continued day after day or month after month. So , we could find out some scientific solutions to minimize the dust particles and some rectification or alterations if needed, for the greater interests of BOOK FAIR.
FOR YOUR KIND INFORMATION , IN THIS 15 DAYS DURING BOOK FAIR, air doesn’t polluted newly . it remains same. Then why the victimize only Book Fair.
I am sure, you and your associates doing invisible and masking politics to hide the people. Book sellers Guilds completely dominated by ruling governments thaught, and for that reason , you are driven for anything in the Name of Pollution.
Oh! Mr Dutta, You should Go first against cities Auto , Taxi. These are main culprit for pollution , not 10 to 15 days Book Fair.
If you really environment thinker, you must go against Mobile towers ( The studies show that it is not only humans but also animals and birds who have been effected by the radiation pollution . The disorientation of birds has been reported .This is evident in India ,the example of Bharatpur bird sanctuary is an interesting one as birds from Siberia are now landing on new spots every winters and some never reach the destination Scientists are baffled by the phenomenon. EMR are catalytic to initiate cancer this happens because of interference of electromagnetic field radiations from towers and mobile phone with electric field inside human cells The people working or living in continuous exposure of EMR radiation are under great risk group) these are killing birds and obviously great machine for pollution and great destructive machine for damaging Bio tranquility.
Without Bio tranquility, we cant live. So why you just running and wasting energy to keep stop Book Fair.
Yes, you may admit with me or may not , if yes, then , you can ask me , if it is in other place then what’s wrong?
Oh! Yes , Mr. Dutta you are right, I agree with you. But , I would like to know, during Durga pujo , Kaali pujo the pollution level becomes very high, then why not suggesting them or why not trying to imposing them to celebrate big big budgeter Durga Pujo inside the Any house. Yes it is also logical, coz, light pollutions harms both way, damaged Cornea and skin, because of the various unknown rays, sound pollution, dusts, smokes. So many thing can be avoid if all durgapujo celebrates inside the house and off course no light except few tube lights.
Yes , if you are really honest in your environment movement you must raise your voice against mobile tower ( it is now threaten for damaging bio tranquility , humans and animals health) , no raise only , fight with them in court ,as like you did for book fair, I will give you donation , and secondly , you must arrange court order for durga pujo , kaali pujo which are highly responsible for pollutions.
I am waiting for your initiations .

Dear Mr. Dutta,
as a passionate lover of our environment you are fighting many a brave battles, and inspired many like us to care for our environment.Perhaps that is the reason I thought of you first, today in the morning, when visiting the Dakshineswar Kali Temple.Plastic wastes scattered here and there was quite shocking.Even the beautiful river flowing beside the temple is in a miserable situation. When the entire earth is being littered with these curse called plastic it is perhaps not unusual that Dakshineswar also will not be an exception.Still it hurts to see it in such a condition.
I am writing all these things to you because I do not know any other person who can tell me what I can do as a lover of our environment and ofcourse Kolkata to save such a place from these menace. You have done a lot to save the Maidan and then to pump fresh oxyzen into KOLKATA’S polluted lungs,so I look forward to you with lots of hope.

I need your email or phone (cell or land line) to contact you as there is an environmental hazard here, because of Metro Rail construction a number of large trees are on the way of destruction. In case there is a storm, the trees will be uprooted. We have contacted several people and also Calcutta Corporation, they did not pay any heed. Some people came over here and made a casual visit and no action had been taken. I do not know whether you can do anything in this matter but you are the best person to provide me the addresses who to contact. If you need the photographs of the trees (there are as many as three very old trees, which does not yield leaves. Hope to get support for this environmental cause. I am giving below my name, email ID and phone number too. Hope to receive a reply from you.

May i know , how to contact Mr.Subhas dutta regarding killing of a 30 ft full grown tree. As the tree is in front of the entrance of an apartment near James long sarani sakher bazar crossing . The bottom portion of the trunk of the tree is being drilled at the circumference and poured with copper sulphate solution to kill the tree as felling tree is illegal.Though i have not seen , who did it, but its obvious to understand ,as the tree is blocking the entrance of the apartment. And once the tree is dead, it will be removed from its place.

Dear Mr. Dutta,
I have retired from Central Govt. Service & have enough time to join you in your crusade for better environment. I had measured Noise pollution created by Piling Operation along the extension route of Metro from Tollygunge to Garia in 2001 and took up with The Pollution Contro Board. Board resricted the operation only from 8AM to 6PM & Metro Rail complied with the order. Noise Pollution while running of Metro trains was measured by me from residential apartments located on either side of Tolly Nullah. Noise was found to exceed permitted level by as much as 30 dBA. Matter was taken up with the PCB & an urgent Memo was issued on 11th November, 2009 by PCB to General Manager, Metro for compliance. It appears that GM, Metro has not taken any action so far. I have issued three reminders to Chairman, PCB, last one on 11th June,2010. I like to discuss the matter with you & shall be obliged to hear from you. My tel: 033-2471 1588 and 9433800847

I would like to get in touch with you over a matter which is about to jeopardize the very existence of the lives of 25 families at 11 B. T. Mr Dutta,i am a great fan of yours.Nowadays i am really upset about some practices taking place near my home.If you read my blog please take appropriate steps.
The pond just facing the front of Baranagar General Hospital in Baranagar, kolkata has been kept in lease.Different types of fresh water fishes are bred here.Naturally a lot of birds are attracted towards this pond. The problem is people have tied fishing nets over pond to avoid any flying bird to prey on these fishes. And that is proving to be quite fatal.I myself have observed two kingfishers being killed by getting trapped in these nets in a couple of days. This is quite dissapointing.Though protecting fishes is ok for them but i dont support it at the cost of the lives of these endangered birds. Please take urgent steps as quickly as possible. My mail- shuvadeepwaiting4u@gmail.com
Hi,
Regards from the Otrivin team.
We found your blog really interesting and were wondering if you would like to help a cause that would help greatly improve the quality of air in our cities. We have recently started an initiative called ‘Let’s decongest’ which will have us giving away saplings to the public in an effort to reduce the harmful effects of pollution. As a part of this initiative we’ll be giving away saplings in Kolkata this weekend.
We would really appreciate if you could help us spread the word by talking about it on your blog or posting the link: http://www.facebook.com/letsdecongest
Looking forward to hearing from you.

I know about Mr. Dutta’s great work as an environmental crusader. I desperately require his help regarding a very serious matter: the widespread construction work going on in the residential area of Salt Lake causing tremendous sound and other pollutions. Everywhere old houses are being demolished and new high-rises are coming up or new stories are being added to the old buildings without caring a fig for the anti-pollution rules. This, of course, conforms to our present-day value-system, where environmental, civic and all other concerns are subjected to the cause of building activities. Very few people care. Residents of Salt Lake are a particularly passive lot. Authorities including the Dept. of Environment, WB Govt, Bidhan Nagar Municipality and Police agree that it is not desirable, that it is even illegal. But they all plead helplessness and in fact, seem quite willing to condone it. Life has become hell for people who are suffering this pollution from very near. I have gone from pillar to post regarding a couple of specific cases near my house, without any success. Mr. Dutta, could you please help? I am professor, dept. of history, Jadavpur University. Dear Mr. Dutta,
I am an aged(65yrs) person and I am in great trouble due to the severe sound pollution by my neighbor. They are running a Fast Food Center in the residential area. The monotonous, irritating and hammering sound propagating by the big exhaust machine disturbing me approx. 9-10hrs. a day.I can not stand it any more.As they are rich and influential nobody speaks against them.I also can not strongly protest for retaliation. Would you pl. help me?bishnu.g@gmail.com;9830064394
How do we join in Revolution? It needs a collective stronger approach. The enemies to this are huge in number & brutal too. The team needs to be stronger & large. Where do we all meet?
How do we directly join his revolution? Individually it won’t grow or leave marked result! It needs a collective, visible & stronger display of efforts. Where to meet him/all?
In line of Ani, I also subscribe the same view. I didn’t find any site or mail id or any social-networking-site membership by Mr.Dutta to contact him.
It’s a great job that he took up the cudgle to fight the menace and succeeded highly also in gathering a mass support, the Govt., both national & international recognition for his relentless strides. But, the torch be kept burning under his unquestionable leadership with many more like minded people to assemble and take it forwarard.
Kolkata, his native city, large enough to reel under its own pollution and hence it demands most of his attntion. In the line of his crusade and sharing with his experience many will like to start working in the vast rural Bengal, the various pollutions and the total plunder wrecking havoc there can well surpass the pollution-sum in the cities.
To combat and contain such pollutions only awareness-campaign works hardly, unless proper policies are undertaken and implemented with teeth–that speaks for intervention by “Green Bench”.
I want to convey some problems and a proposed idea for containing it to Mr. Dutta seeking his idea and suggestions. If, by any chance this blogsite relates him or he visits here to find my words, I would be grateful to him and the instant blogger here.
Thanks,
C.K.Chakraborty (NSS Prog Officer)

Sir,
I live in R.K. Mission Pally Sonarpur where over the past few years many trees have been felled and multi-storied residential complexes are coming up. Here I would like to mention that a neighbour is insisting on having the mango trees and coconut trees (within our boundary) be cut down as they cause disturbance to the electric wires during stormy weather. Sir, please advise us the course of action to be taken in this respect. I salute your endeavours Sir. May God bless you.
Sir,
I pay tribute to the great job you are doing for our coming generations.
I live at Habra, North 24 parganas. It is a semi urban area which is about 50 km away from Kolkata. We the inhabitants of Habra especially in the area like Joygachi, Hatthuba, Kamarthuba, Daharthuba; are facing grave trouble in respect of air pollution caused by the unauthorized and illegal mini rice mills (locally called as CHATAL). I draw your kind attention to the matter as most of the CHATALS have been operating in the densely populated areas without following any sort of pollution control measures openly. They operate the CHATALS introducing traditional methods for boiling, resulting thereby, smoke and fly ash polluting the area severely. During pick seasons, the area became smoky and dusty. Trees are dieing gradually being covered by ash and dust through out the year. It is also came to our notice that people residing adjacent to the CHATALS are suffering from chronic diseases like bronchitis, respiratory problems, skin disease and even lung cancer. Local authorities are mere observer without paying any attention to the miserable condition of thousands of local inhabitants. The situation is deteriorating day by day as the number of CHATALS are increasing day by day without any administrative interference. We are helpless to fight against such powerful business men and their supporters.
I earnestly request you to kindly visit the place and assess the miserable situation of the people of the area. Your intervention may activate the local administration and relieve the local people from dieing silently.
Looking forward for your kind attention and intervention,
Regards,
Gobinda Bhowmick
Respected Sir,
Please give your contact details as I want to give you some information of de-plantation done by some political people of Barasat, (N) 24 Pgs.
A particular portion of kanungo park, garia, kolkata700084 under kmc ward no.110 is occupied round the year with sand, stonechips & bricks of promoters/developers/contractors ..due to dumping of sand, stonechips & bricks in footpath and road, residents of the area and all passers-by face major problems as follows:
1.outlets of drains are blocked causing water logging
2.2/3rd of the road is blocked causing congestion & traffic jam making difficult for mothers & their kids to pass the area during school hours.
3.taking advantage of blockade, people use the portion of footpath as URINAL causing very very bad smell throughout day/night.
4.in the morning(7 to 8.30 am) and afternoon(3 to 5 pm), auto rickshaws are parked in the raod making it more difficult to walk also as a pedestrian.
no body has listened to our grievances or problems for last 2 years and this is going on ………………………….
Couple of observations regarding Dhakuria Lake (Rabindra Sarovar):
i) Large ‘shirish’ trees are drying up suddenly. A few of them were seen being trimmed last year and it was clarified by the labourers doing such trimming job that such process would enhance their growth. However, it went other way. Surprisingly other adjacent trees, which are not valuable at all, at least in terms of value of timber, are doing fine.
ii) Two (2) small islands at the Dhakuria side are seen to be engulfed by water as the water level enhanced in recent years and age old trees on such islands are falling regularly due to constant accumulation of water at their roots. Such islands act as natural habitat to many species of birds and even hosts a few migratory ones in winter. Nowadays, lots of money are being spent in renovation and beautification of the lake, while somehow the rising of water-level is to be arrested. Drazing of lake bed could be an idea as the same would increase the depth of the lake and water storing capacity would also increase.
