Even as the proposed monorail project from Joka to Panihati is gradually gaining momentum, a new project has been submitted by city-based Andromeda Technologies to build a similar facility along 14-km long Budge Budge Trunk Road from Taratala to Budge Budge.
Andromeda has submitted its proposal to the government some time back and now the latter has asked RITES to do a detailed survey of the route and list all underground utilities that presently run along it.
Once the survey is completed, the government will then sit with the company to fix modalities for the project. Andromeda on its part wants to do the project on B-O-T basis (Build-Operate-Transfer) which means the government will not need to spend any money for the project.
World over monorails are very popular mode of transport. The trains run on single track, which is usually on an elevated structure. If Andromeda’s plan is accepted, the Budge Budge to Taratala route will have only one station on the way – Jinjira Bazaar.
While the project cost is taken as around Rs.50 crore per km (meaning Rs.700 crore in all), the company has calculated that about 60,000 passengers everyday will be necessary to make the project feasible.
Seems Andromeda is confident of that amount of footfall. This is quite likely because many large real estate projects are slated to come up in those areas including the prestigious Batanagar riverside project.
